the first week in mayThe first week of May sure isn’t May-like in how it feels.  It’s cold right now in Bergen County!  My goodness it should be a whole lot warmer than in the 50’s!  Warmer weather begins this weekend thankfully.  While the weather is cool, the activity level here is hot!

Everything except swimming pools are open now at our Bergen County ParksOur 9 public golf courses opened up over 1 month ago along with the Bergen County Zoo, Train Ride and Carousel at Van Saun Park.  Despite the cold and rainy spring of the past several weeks, people have been out in the fresh air enjoying themselves.  All of our kayak and paddle boat centers will be open on May 13th too.

In addition to our County centers, here’s what we have for the first week of May on the weekend:

  • It Shoulda Been You – A Musical Comedy
  • 2 Nature Center Cleanups
  • Tenafly Nature Center – Critters & Raptors
  • 2 Classic Car Shows
  • Arts & Crafts Show with Antiques
  • Tenafly High Class of 1987 Event
  • Three 5k Runs
  • Two Walks

It Shoulda Been You  it shoulda been you

Bergen County Players has a new production opening this weeekend.  Starting Saturday night at 8 pm with it’s 1st performance, It Shoulda Been You will make you   laugh until your ribs hurt.  This is a very funny and wacky musical comedy about 2 people about to be married and how their uniquely crazy families create havoc.

This terrific production has weekend performances through June 6th.  Sundays are 2 pm matinees and beginning next weekend, 8 pm performances are on Fridays as well as Saturdays.  Tickes as always are gotten online although I’m sure you can get them at the box office too.

Nature Center Cleanups

cleanupIt’s that time of year again.  Spring cleaning isn’t only for your home.  Nature Centers need to be cleaned and freshened up too.

The Closter Nature Center and the Tenafly Nature Center are both spearheading a town cleanup along with# cleaning up their nature center.  Closter Cleanup Day is Saturday from 10 to 2 and the Tenafly Nature Center’s Trash-A-Thon is Sunday 1-4.  Both Tenafly and Closter will have cleanup assignments for you when you arrive.  In addition to cleaning the Nature Centers, there will be spots assigned to you in both towns to cleanup.

Nature Center Cleanups

This weekend we have 2 returninng very popular events:

Crafty Critters

Crafty Critters happens on Saturday from 2 to 3 pm.  You’ll get to meet one of the Tenafly Nature Center’s special Animal Ambassadors.  Next you’ll create an artistic version of him using supplied craft materials.  Unless, of course, you bring some with yourself.

Tenafly Nature Center

Coming back this month are 2 favorites – Crafty Crtters and Remarkable Raptors.  Meeting an animal up close is so different from reading about them or looking at aRemarkable Raptors distance in a zoo.  You actually get to meet a live animal in person.

Crafty Critters combines meeting and learning about an animal with art.  Once you meet the Critter then you can put it all into a craft expression. This is on Saturday from 2-3 pm and only costs $8 for Nature Center Members and $12 for everyone else.  Remarkable Raptors lets you meet a hawk and an owl up close and learn all about them in depth.  This is $12 for non-members and I think free for members.  It’s Sumday from 11 to 12.  So sign up for Remarkable Raptors and/or Crafty Critters today as space is limited.

2 Classic Car Shows

Everyone knows that I love cars and especially classic cars.  Because this is a very popular topic, you’ll see that car shows are always included in my blog articles.  We have fabulous car shows all season long here and 2 are on this weekend.

classic car showCar shows held here benefit worthy causes and organizations.  There is, as a result, ofte a modest fee to enter but it’s well worth it.  You’ll see amazing, beautifully restored old cars and sometimes motorcycles too.  Additionally, there’s all sorts of vendors from car parts to hot dogs.

Park Ridge’s Recreation Department is holding it’s 12th Annual Recreation Car Show this Saturday from 9 to 3 at 123 Colony Ave.  If it’s raining, they’ll do it on 1 of the following 2 Saturdays weather permitting.  Sunday it’s the Nam Knights Car & Motorcycle Show starting at 11 and running through the afternoon.  This is at 197 Washington Ave in Carlstadt.

Springfest in the Park

Westwood’s series of fun festivals at Veteran’s Park runs from spring through fall.  This weekend is a major crafts, collectibles and antiques show.  The Crafts Show is juried so you know there will be some excellent craftrs on display and for sale.

Springfest in the park runs from 10 to 5 and Veterans Park is at Broadway and 3rd in Westwood.  Stop by and have fun.  There’s all sorts of food there and even some home baked pies!

1987 Tenafly High Grads Event

Tommy Fox’s in Bergenfield has the live band, Action Park, performing this Friday night starting at 8:30 pm.  Two of the members are Tenafly High School graduates so the Class of 1987 is making this a THS 1987 Class Event.  They’d love to have a big crowd so come join them  Tommy Fox’s is famous as an authentic Irish Bar & Restaurant.  So come dance to Action Park’s music, have a pint of Guinness and some Shepherds Pie too!

The first week of May sets the tone for the rest of spring and the coming summer.  There’s so much going on and it’s all so varied.  Go to at least 1 of these events and have a fun weekend!
