Lunar New YearHappy Lunar New Year at the Garden State Plaza highlights Bergen County happenings this week.  We have quite a wide variety of events this week.

Don’t forget about Bergen County’s sponsored options.  Winter Wonderland has bumper car slots available so far along with open skate times.  The Couty’s ski resort, Campgaw Mountain, is open all winter too.  Meanwhile, here’s what we have this week for you:

  • Happy Lunar New Year
  • Audubon Winter Bird Walk
  • Nature Center History Hike
  • Candlemaking & Irish Stories
  • Casino Poker Night
  • Pasta Dinner Fundraiser
  • Live Theater for Children

Happy Lunar New Year

I’m sure you know that the Lunar New Year began on Sunday, the 22nd, as The Year of the Rabbit.  What you might not know is that this is celebrated for 15 days.  As a result, celebrations are continuing and we have one at the Westfield Garden State Plaza this weekend.

On Saturday go to the Court Area of Level 1 near the Pandora store.  Beginning at 12 noon to just past 1 there will be a series of live performances.  You’ll see the traditional Lion Dance of course and so much more.  Just click on this link to find out all about it.

Bergen County Audubon Winter Bird Walk

The Bergen County Audubon Winter Bird Walk is this Saturday starting at 10 am.  Come join everyone in the Teaneck Creek Consrvancy parking lot (20 Puffin Way in Teaneck) where the walk begins.  In addition to seeing some spectacular birds, you’ll also learn a lot about other natural inhabitants in this 46 acre preserve. I bet you’ll also hear how this land is being reclaimed and returned back to it’s pure, natural state.  Register for this event by contacting Don Torino ([email protected] (201) 230-4983)

Closter Nature Center History Hike

Dive into the history of Closter and how important the land was to early settlers.  Because land management is important today too, you’ll find this very interesting.  This Closter Nature Center History Hike is led by the Borough Historian on Sunday at 1 pm.  Go to the CNC cabin (154 Ruckman Rd) where everyone gathers at first.  Since it’s a good hike, this free event is open to adults and from 17 up.  All the details are on this link.

Brigid’s Day and Candlemas

The Bergen County Historical Society is having another special event this Sunday at 1 pm.  Brigid’s Day and Candlemas is a delightful afternoon of candle making, Irish story telling, bagpipes and music.  You’ll learn about the history of Historic New Bridge Landing while you’re having a lot of fun.  Ticket prices range from $7.50 to $12.50  Festivities end at 4:30 so it’s a full afternoon.  You can order your tickets online.

Casino Poker Night

You might be surprised that I’m including this since I limit events to those that are affordable.  However, a Casino level Poker Night hardly ever happens here and has a huge following I’m told so here goes –

The Hasbrouck Heights Elks Club (128 Baldwin Ave) is hosting a Poker Night on Saturday.  Doors open at 6 pm and the buy in fee is $100 which includes dinner.  They advertise this as a Texas Hold Em style.  Since I have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s the information link on it.  The only card game I’m into these days is solataire.  Oh well.

Garden Club of Hackensack

Have you noticed the flowering pots around Hackensack?  The Garden Club of Hackensack does plantings all over town every spring.  In addition, they do public spaces cleanups, teach children and adults about gardening and the environment plus a whole lot more.  To help offset costs, they need to raise funds so let’s help them out this week.  The best part is that this is one dinner you don’t have to cook!

Doors open at 6:30 pm on Friday at the HackensackTroast Athletic Club (74 Troast St, Hackensack) for the Garden Club of Hackensack’s Pasta Dinner Fundraiser.  It’s $30 adults and kids $15 for pasta, salad and a drink.  Please come out and support this great volunteer organization that does so much to beautify the town.
