end of summerJust a few things for you since it’s the end of August.  Summer’s end is upon us and that means Labor Day Weekend is coming up marking the end of summer.  It’s time for getting the kids ready for school, a few last minute summer outings and an end to those outdoor summer concerts and movies.

You know it’s summer’s end because no one is around.  Weekends have hardly any street traffic.  While Staples is busy during the week, weekends are different because people take advantage of the last few warm weekends of the year.  Activities are not planned until after Labor Day as a result.  We do have a few however to keep you busy if you’re in Bergen County this weekend.

Faust, A French Opera

The New York Opera Forum is putting on Faust in Concert this Saturday at 2 pm.  It’s Faust NY Opera Forum happening at the Unitarian Church located at 156 Forest Avenue in Paramus.

This is a French opera that tells the story of Faust.  It’s not at all heavy like the tragic play by Goethe.  The New York Opera forum was created to give opera students an opportunity to perform.  Operas are accompanied by a piano.  This is a great opportunity for you too.  Going to an opera at The Met in Manhattan is extremely expensive.  Tickets are only $25-30.  Opera lovers rejoice – big time opera at small time pricing!

Craft and Antique Show at Veterans Park in Westwood

craft and antique showWhile it’s the last summer craft and antique show at Veterans Park in Westwood, it’s still a major event.  It’s happening rain or shine on Sunday.

There will be over 100 exhibitors and the well known appraiser, Jon Felz, will be there from 11 to 4 appraising items.  This craft and antique show runs from 10 to 5 on Sunday.  Because this is a major show, you can be sure that there will be truly awesome items to see and buy.

Tenafly Nature Center

I truly feel that the Tenafly Nature Center is a special gift for all of us.  Year round there are education programs every week for all ages.  I remember taking my son here as a child and walk along the trails.  Back then (Bill is now nearly 48) there weren’t as many exhibits as there are today.  While that was true, it was always a very wonderful outing with my son.  Today there is so much more for you to enjoy.

This weekend there’s a lot for younger folks.  Teenagers and up can learn about the damage invading species do and held remove them.  That’s what the Forest Defenders programs are all about,  This takes place Sunday morning.

fairy houseBecause there’s so much for the younger set, the Tenafly Nature Center is very popular with parents of young children.  Sunday afternoon for 4 and up is a really fun program.  You get to build your very own house for a fairy.

Don’t forget about Othello by the Black Box Theater too.  I know I’ve written about it before but I’d like to remind you.  This is Wednesday night at 8 pm at the Englewood Public Library.

While we have just a few things at summer’s end, all of them are terrific.  I hope you have a great time as August winds down into Labor Day Weekend.  It’s time to skip writing on upcoming events so you won’t hear from me until after Labor Day.  Have a great time over the next 2 weeks!
