dog parkFor 7 years the topic of an unleashed dog park has been discussed in Teaneck NJ.  If you own a Teaneck home and have a dog, only one park allows dogs.  That’s Windsor Park where your dog must be kept on a leash.  There are no unleashed parks in the Township of Teaneck as a result.

Why There’s A Need

Teaneck is big.  There are 39,776 residents according to the 2010 census.  Moreover there are a lot of pets.  You’d expect this with so many people.  There are a lot of dogs since they are so popular as pets.

Imagine you live in Teaneck and have a dog.  You see No Dogs Allowed signs all over town.  This is a frustrating situation because Windsor Park is the only exception (where dogs must be leashed).  There is no place to take your dog to play with other dogs.

Overpeck Is No Solution

There is a dog run at Overpeck County Park but it’s far from local.  Additionally, it’s not always a friendly place.  Trust me on this since I’ve been there.  I took my dog Mickey to Overpeck and no longer do because dog fights would break out.

Overpeck is an enormous County Park attracting people from all over the general area.  This is not a local dog park. You can’t walk there and the atmosphere is not intimate.

The Unleashed Park Ordinance

This week an ordinance to create an unleashed dog park in Phelps Park was passed for approval by the Township Council.  It looks like it’s going to happen.  Voting is on April 9th for the final approval.  Workmen have already cleared out a space, prepared the ground and erected fences for a dog park in addition.  Teaneck has a generous sponsor for the fencing from Long Fence

You’ll find the soon to be approved off leash park at Phelps Park (1000 River Road) in town.  This is across from Fairleigh Dickinson University.  If you own a Teaneck home and have a dog that loves to play and run with other dogs,  Come out to the Town Council session on April 9th to make sure it’s a Yes vote.  Dogs need this and so do their owners.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I am exceedingly late in replying due to Covid 19 preparations at work. It has been a challenging month as it seems that there have been new challenges daily with getting in process transactions accomplished and re-tooling for this environment. Very fortunately my company, Weichert Realtors, has been using tools such as 3D Matterport tours for many years and doing a lot remotely for decades with webinars, e-signatures using Docusign etc. To add to this Weichert released a completely new platform at the end of January which is very robust with a steep learning curve. The good news is that instead of twice weekly learning modules and coaching, it’s now daily. So I’ve been overwhelmed. Again my apologies. You may wish to look at my most recent blog article which will be followed up with another market update later this week. Barbara
