hire a contractor

How to hire a contractor is often a question homeowners want answered.

When you’re thinking about fixing up your home one of the first questions that comes to mind is how to hire a contractor to do the work.  Before 2006 the only licensed construction contractors were plumbers and electricians in New Jersey.  Today things are different.

If you go to the  Bergen County website you’re advised to do the following before hiring a contractor –

  1. Ask for the contractor’s State registration number (it always begins with 13VH)
  2. Verify the contractor’s license is valid by calling 973-273-8090 or going to www.NJConsumerAffairs.gov/LVinfo.htm
  3. Inquire about any complaints at the State Div. of Consumer Affairs
  4. Get a copy of the contractor’s liability insurance
  5. Contact the insurer to verify that the policy is in effect

You can also read the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs pamphlet on this.  There are many good contractors but there are also people who represent themselves as legitimate, licensed contractors and they are not.  Take the time to check out the people you interview thoroughly.

The internet has become a place to find anything including contractors for work on your house.  Even though I do contribute to Yelp, I also know that there is no real way to verify the reviews there.  This is also true, I believe, of other sites such as Angieslist or Houzz  You should also know that some of these sites charge vendors essentially a referral fee.  How that impacts what they charge you I can not say.  Still, this is something you should know.

My best advice in how to hire a contractor is to check out as thoroughly as you can any contractor you consider.  It is very important to find someone you feel good about.  I mean by this that you should be able to communicate well together.  Your contractor must understand you and you must understand him.  It’s a working relationship.

How to hire a contractor involves doing your best due diligence and finding someone who’s the right fit for you.  If you need the names of several good contractors, call me at 201-741-8490 or contact me through my website where you can give me details on what you need.
